Surface baits

Surface baits are, as it sounds, a move you fish on the surface. Different types of surface baits are, for example, poppers, frogs and walk-the-dog. Fishing with surface baits is most often used in summer when the water is warm and the fish hunt high up in the water bodies. So what is meant by poppers, frogs and walk-the-dog?

Poppers are a move that has a large gap at the front. The gap causes the bait to splash water in front of it when it is fished home. Crank short quick crank strokes to get a splashing effect, pause and then repeat the procedure. Most often, the bite comes just when the bait is still on the surface.

Frogs are exactly what you think. It should resemble a frog swimming to the surface. Also fish home these lures with short crank strokes and pauses to get as close to a frog as possible.

Walk-the-dog is a type of bait that completely lacks a walk of its own. It runs on the surface and is not a "splatter", you jerk it home or make short quick crank strokes to make it go side to side on the surface. Sometimes when a regular popper can scare the fish with its splashes, a walk-the-dog can be completely superior.

Surface baits work well for, among other things, perch, asp and pike. Fishing with surface lures can be so incredibly exciting when you see how the fish come and cut the drag on the surface on a still summer evening.
